Another Clueless Journalist

Tom Allard, the National Security Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald thinks that the Australian SAS has people with the rank of "Lieutenant Corporal". I am not making this up!

I sure the SAS are innovative, but somehow I suspect they're not that innovative.

Clearly, it's high time the SMH did some innovation by getting a National Security Editor who isn't woefully ignorant of military affairs.
(One of the innovative—and controversial—aspects of Special Operations Forces is that they push responsibility down onto enlisted personnel and NCOs, away from officers. The result is that most people who qualify as SOF enlisted personnel would make good sergeants in other units, and many SOF NCOs would make good officers. Since WW2, some people have argued that military forces would be better to shut down SOF units and put all those talented people to better use in conventional units. I don't know enough to judge the merits of this argument.)
